What is so important about Torque?
Torque is the best way to accurately tighten fasteners. If bolts are either too loose or too tight they can cause damage to expensive components or worse still injury to the rider
What is Torque?
Torque is a turning force which is generated by applying a known force at a known radius. A torque wrench does this calculation for you and will either click or pivot in a breaking action to indicate the desired torque has been applied. The Sport Torq uses a breaking action which we believe is better than a click
How is Torque applied?
Referring to the diagram below, it can be seen that as the nut and bolt are tightened the two plates are clamped together. The thread converts the applied torque into tension in the bolt shank. The amount of tension created in the bolt is critical.
Why Torque?
The tension in the bolt creates a "clamping" force between the two parts. If the clamping force is too low, the fasteners can work loose due to vibration or movement between the component parts. If a clamping force is too high, the fastener may permanently stretch and no longer apply the required clamping force. In severe cases the fastener may fail in assembly or during use when under load. Clamping force is generally referred to as the preload.
Why is a breaking Torque wrench better? (See graphs below)
Most conventional torque wrenches click to indicate when the set torque has been reached. When the click occurs the head of the wrench also rotates about 3°. After that the torque wrench effectively becomes a solid bar. This all happens very quickly and if you do not stop pulling the wrench in time or if you double click then the final torque can be a lot higher than one you intended to apply. The consequences of over torque can be the inconvenience of stripping a thread or at worst a costly exercise if you crush your carbon seat post or bars. The Sport Torq uses an innovative breaking action. When the set torque is reached the head rotates 20° giving you a lot more time to react and stop tightening hence vastly reducing the chance of over torque
